The Far East - Travel Information
The Far East
The Far East offers the traveler an encounter with an entirely different culture that the western culture. Religion is one of the main focuses when traveling to the Far East. People, shrines and nature make travel in the Far East exciting and interesting.
Vietnam
Vietnam will always be remembered for the famous Vietnam War, but beyond this painful history there are a lot of things to see in Vietnam. The geographic diversity of the country allows the traveler to go in a relatively short distance from sunny beaches to foggy mountains. From rice fields where women who wear traditional hats work to lively cities.
Nepal
Nepal, the Himalayan Kingdom, offers breathtaking sceneries of huge snowy mountains. Out of the 14 peaks in the world that are over 8000 meters, 8 are in Nepal. The altitude in Nepal ranges from 60 meters above sea level to 8,848 meters (Mount Everest), the highest mountain in the world, and all within 150 km.
Hong Kong
The main characteristic of Hong Kong is the impressive integration of east and west. 150 years of British rule has turned Hong Kong into a blooming business and economic center. On the other hand, Hong Kong inhabitants did not give up on the Chinese characteristics of their culture, so the skyscrapers that outline Hong Kong's skyline and traditional temples and markets can be found side by side in its streets.
Burma
I found Burma to be the most interesting country in the Far East. Burma?s unique culture has been well preserved since it was closed to the West. Only lately it is slowly starting to open.
Laos
While most of the Far East rapidly progressed together with the rest of the world, Laos remained as it used to be hundreds of years ago. Laos remained one of the most authentic countries in the Far East, but the communistic regime of Laos is slowly opening its gates to visitors from the West, and the chance of seeing the country before it will become a second Thailand is vanishing.
Thailand
Thailand is perhaps the most convenient place for tasting the atmosphere of the Far East while preserving a high level of comfortableness. At one moment the traveler can enter into a spiritual ancient temple and at the next moment to step out to a modern crowded street. Thailand is stepping forward in modernization while keeping its own unique identity.
Cambodia
Cambodia is a country with a fascinating history. On one hand Cambodia was the house of one of the most impressive cultures of the ancient world, the Angkor culture. On the other hand Cambodia is a place where one of the most terrible genocide in the history has occurred. Today Cambodia is one of purest countries, but the most interesting one in Asia.
The Philippines
The Philippines is a country with a marketing problem. The foreign tourism to this country has been severely damaged due to several terror incidents that occurred there, and it has still not been recovered from these incidents. Also the fact that the country is compound from more then 7000 islands that are situated relatively far from the mainland does not help in turning the Philippines to a part of the ?must sites? of the travelers in the Far East.
