Halong Bay extends over 1500 sq km of the Gulf of Tonkin at the north-east corner of Vietnam, with over 3000 islands in its waters. The islands are mostly formed out of limestone rocks, and rise up to 200 meters above sea level.

UNESCO declared Halong Bay in 1994 as a World Heritage Site.
